Description
Founded in Villeret, Switzerland in 1735, Blancpain is the oldest watchmaking brand that is still in existence today. As a “prestige” brand, Blancpain is known for creating watches that are at the top-of-the-line in terms of luxury, precision, and innovation.
The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms was designed in 1953 for the Combat Divers, an elite group of French Military tasked to complete undersea intelligence and combat missions during World War II. Thus, the watch needed the following specifications: high water resistance, a protected crown, an automatic movement, high luminescence, anti-magnetic protection, and a unidirectional bezel. From 1953 until now, the Fifty Fathoms has continued to evolve technically, while retaining the same design language and spirit of the original.
Known by collectors as the “Cadillac of Dive Watches,” the Fifty Fathoms 5015-1130-52A measures 45 mm in diameter, with a lug-to-lug measurement of just over 50 mm. It features a scratch-resistant sapphire bezel, crystal, and caseback. Its hands, hour markers, and bezel are all generously coated in SuperLuminova luminescent material, making it extremely legible in the dark. The Fifty Fathoms is water resistant to 300 meters, and is powered by Blancpain’s in-house calibre 1315 movement, which features an impressive 5 days of power reserve and a free sprung balance.
This example of the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms is in excellent pre-owned condition. It has minimal surface scratches on its case and buckle. Some of the AR coating on the crystal has been worn off. It comes with its original Blancpain “Sail Canvas” strap and stainless steel tang buckle.
