It’s hard to put a spin on a pilot’s watch (no pun intended). As a rule, the style is so iconic, there isn’t much room for interpretation. So it is that much more impressive that IWC – arguably the final word on pilots watches – is able to not just reimagine the style, but enhance it in the process.
The watch at hand today, the IWC Pilot Spitfire Chronograph 371705, is a silver-dialed beauty. Capable of powerful timing functions as well as day-date indications, the 371705 checks all the boxes of what defines a pilot’s watches yet does so in an interpretive way. Arabic numerals applied to the dial are also silver, as opposed to the usual contrast found in this style. A stainless steel bracelet lends unity to the overall silvery appearance but breaks with tradition thanks to it’s five-link design, more commonly found on dress watches. Textures and bevelment play together on the dial to add depth and reflection, a departure from the normally flat look found in flieger watches.
Observed for what it is, the IW371705 is certainly a pilot’s watch. But it is also more than that, blending into the realm of dress watches and even style watches thanks to it’s all-silver look. We love IWC’s ability to bend but not break with tradition and are happy to showcase this unique timepiece in our preowned inventory!
