There are few watches, if any, that are as iconic as the Rolex Submariner. First introduced in 1954, the Sub was one of the first dive watches ever produced, and quickly went on to gain traction as a sports watch with rugged capability, yet sophisticated charm. Thus, it gained widespread appeal among both divers and businessmen, alike. Hell, even James Bond wore one. Case in point!
Here we have a Submariner reference 16800 “transitional” model produced in the late 1980’s. Though still thought of as a “vintage” watch, the reference 16800 boasts several modern features that make it more capable than your typical vintage watch. For instance, it was the first Submariner reference to feature a sapphire crystal rather than acrylic, making it much more durable and scratch resistant than its predecessors. It also benefits from an improved depth rating of 300 meters, a 100 meter increase over the previous generation Submariner. Lastly, the 16800 was equipped with an updated 3035 calibre movement, which is the first Submariner movement to feature a quickset date and a higher beat frequency of 28,800 VPH. Thus, the 16800 can be thought of as the best of both worlds – a vintage watch with modern capabilities.
This particular example is in very good pre-owned condition. There are slight scratches on the bezel, case, and bracelet. The tritium markers and hands have aged to an even shade of eggshell white. The stainless steel bracelet shows light stretching and will fit wrists up to 7 1/4″ in circumference.
