The Heuer Carrera was born in 1963 as the brainchild of watch industry legend Jack Heuer. Its name was derived from the Carrera Panamericana, a dangerous professional road race that took place on the streets of Mexico. With the Carrera, Heuer set out to create a chronograph that was both sleek and highly legible, featuring an uncluttered, monochromatic dial design with basic stick markers. The Carrera enjoyed widespread success as a racing watch throughout the 1960’s and 70’s. However, when Jack Heuer retired in the early 1980’s, the Carrera line was discontinued. Due to their relatively short production span, these early Heuer chronographs have gained a cult following among automotive and watch enthusiasts, alike.
This particular example of the Carrera oozes 70’s charm, with its gold-on-gold aesthetic, 38.5 mm cushion case, and brown leather racing strap. It features the ever-reliable, manually-wound Valjoux 7736 movement, which features a power reserve of approximately 44 hours. The watch is in excellent pre-owned condition, showing slight surface scratches throughout its gold-plated case. It is quite rare to find such a clean example of this reference – don’t miss out!
