Description
The Heuer Carrera was born in 1963 as the brainchild of watch industry legend Jack Heuer. Its name was derived from the Carrera Panamericana, a dangerous professional road race that took place on the streets of Mexico. With the Carrera, Heuer set out to create a chronograph that was both sleek and highly legible, featuring an uncluttered, monochromatic dial design with basic stick markers. The Carrera enjoyed widespread success as a racing watch throughout the 1960’s and 70’s. However, when Jack Heuer retired in the early 1980’s, the Carrera line was discontinued. As one of Heuer’s most iconic watches, the Carrera was sorely missed. Thankfully, in 1996, Tag Heuer made the decision to bring the classic line back. Since then, the Carrera has continued to evolve while still paying tribute to its roots.
This iteration of the Carrera, the Calibre 16, features details suited to modern taste, including a 41 mm stainless steel case, 100 meters of water resistance, and an automatic chronograph movement based on the ever-reliable and popular Valjoux 7750. This particular watch is made more aesthetically interesting by its black mother of pearl dial. The dial is somewhat of a chameleon – at a quick glance, it appears to be a dark shade of rhodium grey. However, it displays dynamic shades of striated green, blue, and purple depending on its surroundings. The watch comes with its original stainless steel bracelet, which will fit wrists up to 7 1/2” in circumference. It is in excellent cosmetic condition, with slight surface scratches on its case and bracelet.
