In the 1920’s Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf set out to create a watch that could be sold at a lower price point than Rolex, yet one what would retain the same dependability for which Rolex was known. 100 years later, Tudor continues to make reliable and practical watches that utilize a similar design language to Rolex, yet are a bit easier on the wallet.
The Tudor Black Bay Heritage reference 79230R with a red bezel launched in 2012 to an extremely warm reception, giving new life to the brand. In less than ten years, the Black Bay has become one of the most popular sports watches in the world, thanks to its charming vintage-inspired aesthetics, capable functional specifications, and approachable price tag. This now-discontinued iteration of the Black Bay is referred to as the “Smiley” by the watch community due to the arched “Self-Winding” text on the dial, making it more rare than current models from the Black Bay line. The watch is powered by a modified ETA 2824 movement – a tried-and-true movement that features a power reserve of approximately 38 hours.
This example of the Black Bay Heritage is in excellent pre-owned condition. It has slight scratches on its case and bracelet, and appears to have been worn very sparingly. It is sold as a complete set with its original box and papers. Its bracelet will fit wrists up to 7 1/4″ in circumference.
