One of a select number of Swiss watchmaking companies that can call themselves a “manufacture,” Arnold & Son develops and produces its own movements in-house and exists in a class of its own.
John Arnold, the founder of Arnold & Son, was born in Cornwall in 1736 to a watchmaker father. After honing his watchmaking skills in the Netherlands, he returned to George III’s court in England and later made a name for himself when he presented the King with the smallest repeating watch ever made. Arnold was a highly inventive watchmaker, holding patents for the detent escapement, the bimetallic balance and the helical balance spring, and he enjoyed great respect from his peers.
Later in his career, Arnold’s son, John Roger Arnold, joined his father’s firm. Their partnership resulted in Arnold & Son becoming the Royal Navy’s leading supplier of timepieces, further cementing its place in watchmaking. The contributions this father and son made to not just the watchmaking profession, but history itself, cannot be overstated.
In 2014, Arnold & Son celebrated its 250th anniversary. Today, it is still going strong as one of the leading Swiss watchmakers. Shop Arnold & Son watches online or in-store from Feldmar Watch Company.
