German design is immediately recognizable whether found in architecture, automobiles, or watches thanks to its practical focus on functionality as well as a distinctive utilitarianism that still leaves room for useful decoration. To quote the French author and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, “Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away”. So to behold the dial of the PanoMaticLunar from Glashutte Original is to understand that nothing else can be stripped from the beautifully simplistic dial.
With a large off-center hour-minute snailed subdial set just above a matching small-seconds indicator, the PanoMaticLunar leaves extra real estate in the dial’s upper left. Whereas this watch’s brethren – the PanoGraph, PanoReserve, and PanoMaticInverse – each elect to fill this space with their own distinct complications, the PanoMaticLunar features one of the more beloved features – the moonphase. Recessed beneath the dial is the gorgeously designed moonphase wheel that turns in time with the current phase of the lunar cycle. On the back, the exhibition caseback shows off every fine detail of the stunningly decorated Caliber 90-02 movement. Thanks to GO’s special galvanization process, the white dial gleams and reflects at every turn and with blued Alpha hands, telling time is an ease even at a glance.
