A Guide to Buying Your First Luxury Watch
So, you’re ready to buy your first luxury timepiece? Congratulations! There’s certainly a lot to think about. From what to look for, to where to buy, we’ve rounded up our tips for first time luxury watch buyers.
Questions to ask yourself before you begin
Before you go shopping for a new luxury timepiece, have concrete answers to these questions. While you are browsing, revisit your answers every once and awhile to ensure the timepieces you are considering check everything off of your list.
- How often will you be wearing the watch?
- Will you be wearing your timepiece daily? If so, what type of environment do you work in?
- Are there any extreme conditions in which you want to be able to wear the timepiece?
- How much are you willing to spend?
- How do you describe your personal style?
What to look for?
Versatility
For your first luxury timepiece, it’s smart to find something as versatile as possible. Ideally, you should look for a watch that could be worn with just about anything for any type of occasion. We suggest something classic and neutral that you won’t get sick of looking at daily. Try the Ball Arabic Chronometer.
Brand
You can’t go wrong with one of the iconic watch brands, especially for your first luxury timepiece. We carry Ball, Tag Heuer, Nixon and over 65 more luxury designers.
Movement
A watch movement is essentially what makes the watch work. Movements typically fall into two categories, quartz and mechanic (or automatic). Quartz movements have the typical tick-tock motion as they move around the watch. The second hand moves once per second. Mechanical movements have a smooth second hand motion. Most quartz watches are battery powered while mechanical timepieces don’t require a battery. Quartz watches are very accurate and have less moving parts, making them less expensive. Mechanical watches, however, may last longer if cared for correctly.
Features
There are many different features that should be considered when luxury watch shopping. Besides the basics like size, shape and color, maybe you want features like a large date display, stop watch functionality or an alarm. Perhaps you travel a lot for work and want a watch that displays multiple time zones. Whatever it is, make sure to think long and hard about the features you need your timepiece to have.
Water Resistancy
Unless you plan on wearing it in extreme conditions, we suggest something water resistant enough for the shower and other everyday activities. Check out the Maurice Lacroix Les Classiques Automatic Date (50m).
