Partners in Time: The Feldmar and Accutron Story
The story of Accutron watches is inextricably linked with the story of Feldmar Watch Company. Since the early days, Feldmar’s historic location in Los Angeles served as the “Accutron Center”, repairing and servicing thousands of the iconic timepieces from all over the world. That connection is maintained today with Feldmar’s own CEO, Scott Meller, appearing on “The Accutron Show Podcast”. Through the years, Feldmar has proudly carried the full line of Accutron watches in our showroom and online.
Accutron: The Spirit of Innovation
The middle part of the 20th century represented a period of innovation in watchmaking with a dizzying array of new technologies revolutionizing both how watches were made and how people wore them. The Accutron watch played an outsize role in timekeeping’s shift from measuring accuracy in seconds per day to seconds per month. This was achieved thanks to the all-new tuning fork movement which sent the hands flowing effortlessly around the skeletonized, futuristic green and silver dial. From its first iteration, the Accutron was the most innovative watch of its day.
What’s Old is New Again
They say lightning doesn’t strike in the same place twice, but Accutron has put pause to that statement. With the 1960s tuning fork movement, Accutron took a quantum leap forward in watch technology. Then they did again in 2020, shocking the world of horology with the introduction of the electrostatic movement featured in the all-new Spaceview 2020 and Accutron DNA timepieces. Whereas Accutron’s heritage movements relied on the high-frequency vibration of a tuning fork, the new “electrostatic” movements utilize twin turbines that rotate as a result of human motion at incredible speeds between two electrodes affixed to the movement. The energy, stored in an accumulator, powers two motors; a world’s first electrostatic motor fueling the fluid second hand and a step motor powering the hour and minute hands. This is all visualized on the classic green and silver dial thanks to the gliding hands and flickering motion of the underlying watch mechanics.
An Interior as Luxurious as the Exterior
The Spaceview 2020 18k Gold isn’t just intricate on the outside. It features the Accutron proprietary electrostatic movement that uses an intricately engineered motor and turbine system to generate both power and the smooth forward glide of the second hand.
The second hand automatically stops at 12 o’clock after 5 minutes of non-activity to ensure power savings. It continues to keep time, and when you want to see the second hand’s motion, you just swing your arm fully for 3 to 5 seconds.
Just 60 of these showstopping, highly collectible timepieces were created to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Accutron brand.
For decades, Accutron has blazed trails and pulled watchmaking into the future. Bold innovations, technologies, and styling define Accutron watches, making them a wearable piece of history and fulfilling the promise of the Accutron motto: “It’s Not a Timepiece. It’s a Conversation Piece.”
