Hot List: November 22, 2024
Titanium has been having a moment in the world of watchmaking — so much so that we’re featuring a half dozen or so on our hotlist this week. We also couldn’t help but think back to the insipid, faux-inspiration song from 2011 that was a harbinger of death for decent music that year and beyond. So we hope you enjoy this high strength-to-weight hotlist without any earworms ruining your read.
ZENITH DEFY EXTREME DIVER
This DEFY Extreme Diver in a 42.5mm angular case is crafted in titanium, equipped with a rotating black ceramic bezel and helium escape valve with a water-resistance of 60 ATM. Of course, this Zenith is powered by the legendary El Primero 36,000 BPM movement. If only the Titanium song had a tempo of 36,000, it might go by faster.
BREGUET CLASSIQUE 7147
A true classic, much like Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On and unlike the aforementioned musical travesty, the guilloché here combines “clous de Paris” and basket motifs and is surrounded by Roman numerals. On the technical side, this model features an extra-flat movement that has been decorated by hand and has an off-centered oscillating weight.
TUDOR PELAGOS FXD
The Pelagos FXD is the same size as its regular Pelagos predecessor but with a 42mm brushed titanium case. It’s also thinner than the original Pelagos at only 12.75mm thick. The watch is rated at a depth of 500m — more than a Sub or Seamaster! Plus the FXD (fixed) case gives the watch a solid tool watch vibe.
TRILOBE UNE FOLLE JOURNÉE DUNE
Folle Journée translates to ‘crazy day’. Dune translates to dune, which is the dial color of this playful and unique watch, which has three moving, off-centered, floating rings that move forward to represent the time. The video for the Titanium song certainly has a crazy day on display for its young protagonist but hardly has the same joie de vivre as this watch!
TAG HEUER CARRERA CHRONOGRAPH EXTREME SPORT
You shoot me down, but I won’t fall. I am titanium. Those lyrics just don’t make any sense! But this Carrera Chronograph Extreme Sport makes a lot of sense in the way it brings together cutting-edge materials and bold aesthetics. It’s designed for real watch aficionados, and this watch merges precision engineering with a rugged, adrenaline-driven design.
NOMOS CLUB SPORT NEOMATIK 34MM
The case of this fine new entry into the 34MM case space is steel, so we’ll take a (brief) break from our Titanium song roast. The Club Sport neomatik 34 is the smallest watch model yet to feature NOMOS’ DUW 3001 movement, which guarantees that this automatic watch not only is great but also delivers a precise performance.
HAMILTON KHAKI FIELD 36MM ENGINEERED GARMENTS LIMITED EDITION
This perfectly sized classic Hamilton field watch is part of a collaboration with NY-based fashion brand Engineered Garments and is part of a limited run. Housed in a well built all-brushed titanium case, this watch feels exceptionally robust while also being light, comfortable, and strong.
SEIKO PROSPEX SPEEDTIMER SSH165 GPS SOLAR
If you like a watch with 15 distinct functions including a perpetual calendar that can run with quartz precision without any batteries (just sunlight), then this Speedtimer is for you. In case you’re wondering, the case and bracelet material here is… steel!
LONGINES MASTER COLLECTION
We love the Master Collection for its fine details — like the small seconds hand, dial texture, and engraved numerals. This watch also features an automatic movement that boasts a weekend-proof 72 hours of power. Plus, at just over 38MM, anybody can feel comfortable wearing this watch.
BULOVA SUPER SEVILLE
Drawing inspiration from the Bulova Super Seville Day-Date from the 1970s, the new Super Seville merges retro aesthetics with state-of-the-art Precisionist quartz technology for a timeless yet modern (and very precise) appeal.
HAMILTON KHAKI FIELD MURPH 38MM
While being a bit overlong and at times confusing, Interstellar, nevertheless, has become a classic movie. It is also known for debuting one of Hamilton’s many great movie watches, the 38MM Murph, with its distinctive hour and minute hands. Here we are featuring the version with the newer light-colored dial. Now can you name what famous watch the kid in the Titanium video was wearing? Exactly!
MAURICE LACROIX AIKON AUTOMATIC
Custom dictates that we must end our titanium journey together with our final titanium watch, the Aikon Automatic from Maurice Lacroix. Inspired by the iconic Calypso of the 90s, the AIKON has become one of the most recognizable pieces in the Maurice Lacroix collection. And now we have a fully titanium version!
