Global Watchmaking: Where Are Your Favorite Timepieces Made?
You’re sporting that luxury watch around town, but do you know where it came from? If you guessed your watch was from Switzerland, there’d be a good chance you were right, but many luxury watch brands are manufactured outside of the ‘Watchmaking Capital of the World.’ Follow us around the globe to see where luxury timepieces are made!
The United States
While there are many American watch brands, it doesn’t necessarily mean their timepieces are manufactured here. Shinola watches are made in Detroit and use Swiss and other imported materials while DEVON timepieces are wholly developed and manufactured right here on American soil! In fact, DEVON’s Tread 1 was nominated for the esteemed Gran Prix d’Horlogerie de Geneve in the category of Design and Concept Watch—the first American brand to be recognized for this award.
From Germany, hails the Glashutte watch brand family—NOMOS, Original, and Muhle! In fact, Glashutte is the name of the town where German watchmaking first began. In German watchmaking, precision is key.
It was truly an honor to host a Grand Seiko event at Feldmar this year because we were able to witness the art of Japanese watchmaking from a true watch craftsman! Citizen Eco-Drive timepieces are also manufactured in Japan, and are famous for never needing a battery. We love all of the unique features watch brands bring to the table!
There’s nothing quite like a timepiece or piece of jewelry from Bulgari. The majestic symbols of Rome are incorporated into every accessory. The Serpenti has become one of the most recognized symbols in the watch and jewelry industry thanks to Bulgari.
It only began in 2002, but Bremont is making waves in the watchmaking industry! If you want to stick to durability, precision, and a reputation that these watches have been manufactured for military squadrons around the world, then look no further than Bremont. They’ve even collaborated with the likes of Boeing and Jaguar to create some sleek timepieces!
Bet you didn’t know that the adventurous Suunto timepieces are designed in Finland. In fact, the Core, Lumi, t1c, t3d, t4d, M-Series, and Quest models are designed in Finland and assembled in China, while all other models are designed and made in Finland. These timepieces are fitting for the thrill-seeking adrenaline junkies of the world, with their Spartan Ultra and Spartan Sport GPS timepieces.
More than half of our watch brand collections at Feldmar are Swiss made, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. What makes these watches so incredible? Not only are their movements assembled in Switzerland, but they have also been inspected by the most expert manufacturers in Switzerland. Le Locle, Jura Mountains, Villeret, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Geneva —you name it. These ‘maisons’ hold the utmost pristine reputation in the watchmaking world. Some major Swiss movements? Cartier, Tissot, Breitling, Arnold & Son, Oris, Maurice Lacroix, Carl F. Bucherer, and many more. See our entire list of brands, here!
